This Mother's Day, X-Ray and I went to see Matilda the musical at the West End. The production, based on Roald Dahl's beloved book, was fast, clever, engrossing, and entertaining. We loved it and came away CRAVING CHOCOLATE CAKE!
So when we received a bespoke cake enquiry for a Matilda themed children's cake I was all over it. Matilda's love of books, the alphabets, the bright primary colours and of course, Mrs Trunchbull's cake. There was just so much to be inspired by.
I started the process by making cute little books out of sugar paste in bright colours. The stage of the musical had these beautiful alphabets suspended from the ceiling - I wanted to do something similar with them and chocolate drips down the blue cake. Why blue? Because Matilda's dress is blue, duh.
That Bruce Bogtrotter chocolate cake scene, whether in the book, movie or production, is one of the most terrifying scenes ever made centred around...cake. Any Matilda-themed birthday cake NEEDS to have a reference made to Mrs Trunchbull's chocolate cake. The cake in the movie is a multi-layered chocolate sponge cake, with chocolate buttercream slathered on in a rustic fashion. Believe me when I tell you buttercreaming a cake in a messy-rustic fashion is MORE difficult than a smooth flawless finish.
This was actually the most time consuming element of the cake. A 3" triple-layered chocolate sponge cake with chocolate frosting, iced in a rustic fashion. I didn't want to just slap the cake on as is. So I cut a few slices out and used the slices to further decorate the cake.
This is such a Matilda birthday cake! I hope you like it as much as I do :)
Lots of love,
Reshmi xoxo
