You won’t believe some of these cakes!

Celebrity weddings are usually an extra affair with millions pumped into them – thrones, castles, Elton on the piano and seriously elaborate wedding cakes. Those are the kind of cake commissions we relish. A chance to flex our creative cake muscle and push some boundaries. We’ve been pondering our favourite celebrity wedding cakes – and some that we thought were more than a tad disappointing.

 

The Best Celebrity Wedding Cakes Ever

1. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

When Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds got married in 2012, they went all out with the desserts. They had a dessert table overflowing with their favourite sweet treats. The jewel in the crown was their four-tier wedding cake.

We loved that they paired a heavily decorated, feminine base layer with more-simple tiers above it. The romantic ruffley flowers with the sharp and clean tier edges. The flavours were vanilla-and-sour cream cake with peach-apricot preserves and Earl Grey and milk chocolate buttercream. We love those light, floral flavours balanced out with the subtle tang of sour cream and smokiness of Earl Grey. It cost $3,000, but we reckon it was every cent spent well. 2. Fearne Cotton and Jesse Wood

Back in 2014, Fearne Cotton and Jesse Wood’s wedding was the place to be. Packed with celebs, there was pressure on the big day to deliver, we are sure. And Fearne and Jesse absolutely nailed it with their multicoloured floral centrepiece.

The cake towered over guests, with swirls of bright flowers covering it. We love that it’s fun and contemporary, reflecting the couple's bright and bubbly selves, and would’ve been a real talking point at the wedding – which all good wedding cakes should be!

3. Kate Moss and Jamie Hince

Kate Moss and Jamie Hince got hitched in Southrop, with a garden-party reception. However, we’re pretty sure Mossy’s wedding was anything but chintzy or basic. The couple went for a six-tier extravaganza cake, with each layer being a different flavour. This is a great shout as everyone likes options, right?!

The cake decoration is executed perfectly - lots of pretty sugar paste lily of the valley blossoms, with delicate royal icing piping, all rounded out with fresh flowers at the bottom and top. It matched their laid-back-but-fancy wedding vibe perfectly too!

4. George and Amal Clooney

Wow, George and Amal Clooney’s wedding cake certainly made a big first impression. They bucked the trend to go for a square, Art Deco style cake with lots of striking geometric patterns.

There was also some gold detailing to match the room the reception was held in. Inside? Chocolate cake – a choice we applaud! We even like Amal's devil may care attitude over getting any choccie cake crumbs on her gorgeous Oscar de la Renta.

5. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

The Kardashians and Ye –  all eyes were on this lavish wedding – and marriage, and divorce. So we were expecting fireworks. And they delivered! 

The cake didn’t disappoint. Allllll seven foot of it. There were seven tiers, all different fruit flavours. The square wedding cake was a true centrepiece on the day with sugar paste flowers adorning it, and a wreath of beautiful fresh flowers at the base. And we must say, rather unexpectedly classy too compared to her previous wedding. More on that later.

6. Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie

Hilary has been down the aisle twice, but the first time was with Mike Comrie. At this wedding she opted for a naked wedding cake, for a vintage feel.

The three tiers of white cake and vanilla buttercream were separated by fresh blush roses, floating over a bed of fresh roses and peonies. The whole thing was romantic, cute, pretty and chic. Often NOT the case with naked wedding cakes (or celeb cakes even for that matter...) so we are very much all over this!

7. Sofia Vergara and Joe Mangeniello

When Gloria from Modern Family married Alcide from True Blood in Palm Beach, it was only going to be glam, glam, glam – and spenny, too. The acting duo opted for five tiers of frou-frou perfection, that cost around £6,000.

The cake was teaming with intricate detailing – an abundance of sugar paste flowers and textures, with a huge sugar paste bouquet as the topper.

8. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Brangelina opted for a unique wedding day. Remember Ange’s dress that the kids helped decorate? Well that carried on to the cake, too.

Their son, then eleven-year-old Pax, made the naked cake himself. He constructed an impressive three-tier cake with some cute fondant flowers on the side. I love the wholesomeness of this (even if it is just a snapshot of happier times).

8. Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson and Lauren Hashian

Dwyane showed his softer side at his Hawaiian wedding to long-time love, Lauren Hashian. The pair had a simple tiered ivory cake with a scalloped buttercream finish, a rainbow buttons design on the top, and tropical orchids cascading down.

The couple obviously had an intimate and fun wedding, with kids being a real focus – we’re sure the cake was a real hit with them. 

And now for the Worst Celebrity Wedding Cakes of All Time…

1. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it marriage was all wrong, right from the get-go. And that includes the awful cake that Kim ‘n’ Kris went for. The octagonal cake was in fact six tiers of awfulness – why are there two random gloss-paint-black tiers stuck in between uneven tiers? Which cake maker thought yep, that's a great idea, let's do it! WHY? Kris...blink twice if you want to be rescued.

2. Khloe Kardashian and Lamar

It’s hard to decide what was the worst part of Khloe and Lamar’s cake (another doomed Kardashian pairing). This cake has no idea who or what it even is.

Baroque? Damask? Goth? Pastels? Fresh flowers? Royal icing dots? It's like they literally checked every box on the wedding cake consultation form and ended up with a five-tier monstrosity that included cystic acne dots, alongside a black stencilling and trim that had strong echoes of Kim and Kris’ equally gross cake. Does bad taste in cakes run in the family or something?

3. Prince William and Kate Middleton

Wills and Kate had one of the biggest weddings the world has ever seen. The fairytale wedding ended in a reception at Buckingham Palace, which sadly was not televised (would have loved to have heard Haz’s best-man speech, considering the lols in his autobiography). The cake, however, was confusing. Here's a modern couple from the royal family - party animals in their heydays (we've even heard of Will's apres-ski shenanigans), and progressive campaigners for current issues such as the environment and mental health. But WHY oh WHY must their wedding cake be so...bland?

It's large, we'll give it that. But so much boring old school decoration that definitely doesn’t say “modern Royals” to us. The worst bit though are the bottom tiers, which are shaped like literal bottoms pooping out flowers – we just cannot unsee it!

4. Harry and Meghan

It seems poor taste in wedding cakes must be a hereditary thing. First, the Kardashians, and then the Windsors. Harry and Meghan’s wedding cake is three dull unevenly stacked tiers of poorly, sorry, "rustic" iced buttercream.

I LOVED the wedding. The glamour, the cast of Suits, everything about it was so cool at the time. And I wish I could extend that enthusiasm to the cake. It's just, blah. If it was made by the flower girls and page boys there would've been way more kudos - Brangelina style. But sadly no, this was a basic professional cake, embellished with just fresh flowers. UnDeRWhELmInG, sure, but did they HAVE to make it worse by displaying them on really crass and ornate gold heirloom stands?! Soz, H & M, this just screams mega mis-match to us.

5. Victoria and David Beckham

Probably the most-ridiculed wedding of all time, certainly in British pop culture, is that of the Beckhams Snr. Remember the thrones, matching purple outfits and fairy crowns? Wow, we cringe with delight just thinking about it.

Their cake was decorated with vines and apples – perhaps they were going for an Adam and Eve vibe?! Was it even cake? Or an elaborate salad bowl?? If that's not bad enough, it was topped off with a model of them both naked on the top. Random celeb things that us plebs wouldn't understand.

6. Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz

Our theory about poor-cake taste being hereditary is beginning to really stack up (‘scue the pun). Actually, little is known about the Peltz-Beckham’s wedding cake other than it pictured at the back. We hear Nicola's dad is suing their wedding planners too - is it because the cake is so dull?

Oh they did admit half of it was made out of cardboard aka dummy tiers. Brooklyn, who is not famed for his IQ, told a TV show they cut into the wrong half and struck cardboard in front of all their guests. Cute. The fallouts from this wedding are deffo full of dummy tears...see what I did there?

7. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Remember TomKat? That jumping on Oprah’s sofa moment?! Seems like a fever dream looking back on it now, right? Well yep, Mr Mission Impossible did indeed marry Joey Potter from Dawson’s Creek. The whole thing was absolute madness, including their wedding cake.

There were five wonky tiers of shiny fondant, horrible bevelled edges, covered in uniform and identical sugar flowers. The whole thing is a real tilting snoozefest, for a couple of A-List and pop culture icons. 

8. Donald Trump and Melania

Last but by no means least is the President of bad taste, Donald Trump. When he married his autobot wife, Melania, the cake was not so much a tiered affair as a steaming pile of yukh. You cannot see actual cake for flowers. What a shocker, it’s tacky and gross.

 

Perhaps we've been a bit unkind in our commentary - after all, it is a couple's special wedding cake, made by a professional bakery. But we figured, if the Oscar red carpet is up for grabs with fashion shaming, then a bit of cake-shaming is more than ok. If anything, it should be encouraged - let's stop criticising people's personal appearances, and start criticising their personal tastes.
